What is a fire retrofit?
In Ontario, fire retrofit refers to a building's ability to conform with local fire codes. Local fire departments will inspect existing building's and make mandatory recommendations for modifications to existing units and structures to comply with the current Fire Code. Typically this occurs with older buildings that have not been built to up-to-date fire code standards.
Why undergo a fire retrofit?
By law, It is the budling owner's responsibility to be up to date with the newest fire code standards. This mean your building must have the necessary upgrades and/or maintenance items to meet those requirements. As an owner, you may be liable in the event of a fire should your building not be retrofitted. It is best practice for owner's to review and make these changes proactively, rather than rely on local fire department inspections and orders.
